Sodom, along with Gomorrah, was a city who's claim to fame was its extreme wickedness. Genesis 13:13 records "Now the men of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the LORD." Later, Genesis 18:20 reveals God's thoughts about Sodom: "Then the LORD said, 'The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous . . . '"
Although never occurring again in the Bible as an actual city, Sodom is referred to frequently as the ultimate in ungodliness (cf. Isa. 1:10; 3:9; Ezek. 16:46; Zeph. 2:9; Matt. 11:23ff, Rev. 11:8). Sodom's sins were so ungodly that even today we use words like "sodomy" and "sodomites" in reference to that ancient city.
